In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.
Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!
Brand New World (2015)
Brand New World is the promotional track from Kisumai’s fourth full album and it feels like a party. To be more specific, it sounds like a World Cup song. It also follows one of the most gloriously over-the-top intro tracks the group has ever featured on their albums.
For me, this song is neither here nor there. I like it quite a bit but I tend to forget it exists. I’m not sure why this is. Maybe the music just lacks an identifiable Kisumai stamp. The festival-like atmosphere is upbeat and exciting all the way through, buoyed by a percussive backbone that keeps things moving. The chorus follows suit, offering a bombastic bit of EDM-inspired dance pop. It’s an incessant little earworm, refusing to dial down its intensity for the entire four minutes. The song will definitely have you dancing, so I guess it does its job!
The effects-heavy music video transforms the group’s trademark roller skates into mini hoverboards, adding to the futuristic visuals. Other than that, the video seems to prioritize glossiness over personality. In this way, it fits the song well.
