In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.

Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!

Saigo mo Yappari Kimi (2015)

We’re knocking on the door of my favorite Kisumai era, and Saigo mo Yappari Kimi’s b-sides hint at that greatness. On My Mark and Last Lover are incredible, anthemic dance tracks, proving that the group’s discography runs deep. In contrast, Saigo mo Yappari Kimi is a stark ballad perfectly suited to the movie it soundtracks.

You all know I’m not a huge ballad listener, but I tend to enjoy a lot of Kisumai’s slower material. These songs usually retain their personality and offer striking melodic composition. In Saigo mo Yappari Kimi’s case, the energy is more rhythmic than expected. The verses have a cool structure that highlights the fitful nature of the instrumental. I love the spoken-word moments. The pre-chorus is much more generic, but Saigo mo Yappari Kimi’s chorus drives the sentiment home.

The video is also striking, limiting color but bringing in a crowd of onlookers to create a still-life frame for the group. The choreography incorporates sign language – a direct connection to its accompanying film.
