In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.
Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!
Endless Summer (2020)
On the whole, 2020 was not my favorite year when it comes to Kisumai’s music. I mean, the year obviously had a lot of problems beyond just music, but as far as their discography goes it didn’t feel like they were evolving or even playing to their strengths. Endless Summer is a nice fizzy dance track, well-produced and energetic. But, I think any Johnny’s group could have performed this one. It doesn’t read as classic Kisumai.
With that said, I will never say no to a big old dance track. Endless Summer propels on tropical synth and bounding percussion. It’s brisk and bright and definitely sounds like summer. The pre-chorus rap is a ton of fun, bringing new dimension to the track without upending it. The chorus is anthemic in the Johnny’s way and even echoes melodic elements from Kisumai’s debut single Everybody Go. The group once played a game where they had to identify “come on” lyrics from their discography. They’ve unknowingly become the “come on” kings, using that phrase far more than you’d think!
When I imagine Kisumai and summer, I’ll always go back to 2016’s fantastic I Scream album first. But, Endless Summer makes for a nice sequel. For some reason, the YouTube video was deleted, making this the only single that’s not represented on their channel. Weird – especially since they uploaded it back when the song was released. For now, we’ll have to do with a bilibili link.
