December (particularly this year) is the time for Christmas songs in kpop. Now, I love me a good Christmas song, but the problem is that they naturally have an expiration date. Luckily, April’s Snowman is more of a winter single than holiday-themed. Despite only debuting a little over four months ago, the girls have already survived a member loss and somehow released three singles in such a short time. Their first two, especially the more recent Muah, have convincingly positioned them as rookies to watch in the cutesy sub-genre of kpop. Snowman continues the cute, but doesn’t have the same bubblegum pop energy. Like winter itself, it’s a little more subdued. I’m not sure it’s what they need right now and will likely float by as a pretty uneventful blip in their discography. That said, the song is still very pleasant, especially the “oh wah oh wah oh wah” refrain that buffers the chorus. It also lets the members show off their vocals more than they’ve been able to in the past. Still, listen to Muah first.
