Taking into account both Korean and Japanese releases, BAP has now given us six singles since last November. And although none have become instant classics in their discography, the fact that they’ve all been so consistently good (and varied in sound) is quite a feat. Fly High continues that trend, opting for a more generic dance pop sound while still impressing with its dramatic instrumentation.

Fly High actually feels like a counterpart to Boyfriend’s recent j-pop single, Jackpot, in that the two songs share a propulsive pop approach that’s heavy on the string section. Stacking them against each other, BAP’s effort isn’t quite as strong, but that doesn’t mean it lacks punch. The guys are working with a full-throated dance beat here that puts many of their darker hip-hop influences on hold. The near-constant symphonic backing is an incredible touch, letting Fly High stick out among its less adventurous EDM peers. I only wish the melody was as in-your-face as the production. Ultimately, it hits too many familiar, forgettable notes. Yes, it’s catchy and easy to sing along with, but it lacks the sense of urgency that makes songs like Jackpot such a treat.

Luckily, the dense blend of instrumentation gives Fly High enduring energy, and makes the chorus sound bigger and bolder than it actually is. BAP has always brought a much-appreciated sense of drama and bombast to their music, and those are exactly the touches that make Fly High a strong conclusion to their very prolific 2016.
