On the road to re-establishing their brand over the past year or so, B.A.P have blitzed us with a variety of sounds, from the dark theatricality of last November’s Young, Wild & Free to the uptempo pop of Feel So Good and That’s My Jam. Now, they return with a song that feels like a sequel to their very best single, 2013’s One Shot.
Skydive has dramatic aggression to spare, kicking all over the place with unbridled energy. This aural assault begins immediately, with the central hook delivered over an intro of electric guitar. From here, the song segues into an off-kilter beat that at first feels as if it’s at odds with the template that the song’s set up. This unexpected rhythmic pattern gives the verses needed intrigue, especially as Skydive lurches into its chorus, which switches things up yet again. I would have loved a more melodic approach here to offset the hip-hop heavy verses, but at the same time, it’s hard to resist the hook’s raw, shout-along energy. The chorus forgoes a more traditional structure, opting to crash in and out rather than remain climactic through the entire segment. This push and pull results in even more interesting rhythmic diversity.
The production here is top notch, delivering that high octane mash-up of hip-hop and rock that B.A.P made their names on. While most tracks opt for at least some restraint, Skydive turns everything up to eleven. The track is pure bombast, smashing listeners over the head with its sheer power even when pieces of its melody hold back. This is the exact sound that B.A.P excel at, and it’s thrilling to see them back at it.
