Though it’s not a problem unique to them, Badkiz may just hold the record for cycling through the most members across the span of their four year career. The group is currently a quartet, but has been home to a shocking fifteen different girls since debuting in 2014. And the thing is, this was never a large-configuration girl group. At its biggest, Badkiz consisted of only five performers. With a turnover rate reminiscent of a minimum wage fast food employee, it’s no wonder they’ve never been able to catch on with the public.

This is a shame, because new single Just One Day (딱 하루) is actually quite solid. Its vaguely tropical, synth-sprinkled production already sounds dated, but not in a cloying way. Instead, its syncopated electronic soundscape is filled with interesting choices in texture. Many of the repeated synth loops have an airy sort of appeal that approximates woodwinds while still retaining a dance floor edge. There’s a wonderful sense of percussion driving the entire song, which adds an addictive punch to Day’s otherwise staid chorus.

Produced by up-and-comers Aven Tradition, who have also crafted underrated tracks for Laboum and MVP, Just One Day doesn’t reinvent the wheel. But, it’s stronger than many recent efforts by much more established artists. I like the fact that it doesn’t feel shoehorned into one of the strictly established girl group categories (ie: cute, sexy, girl crush, etc). Instead of bending over backwards to impress with its concept, it spends its time simply being a good pop song. It’s just a shame that so few will hear it.
