To put it bluntly, Berry Good’s new music video is berry bad. Sorry for the lame pun, but it almost seems as if the director went out of their way to create the cheapest, most visually unappealing video they could muster. Luckily, I write my reviews without focusing too much on a song’s accompanying visuals. And taken on its own merits, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo (비비디바비디부) is another solid release from this underrated girl group.

From the whimsical title alone, it’s clear that Bibbidi is aiming to provide something light and fluffy rather than recreate the trendy tropical sound of last fall’s Don’t Believe. In fact, the song couldn’t be farther from current trends, taking its influence from genres as disparate as disco and country western. Bibbidi swirls with a rush of sugary hooks that blend more traditional pop delivery with a heavy dose of spoken aegyo asides that seek to create the type of catchphrase-driven novelty that helped groups like Twice and IOI become so ubiquitous. During the song’s verses, this works in fits and starts. It’s helped along by a busy instrumental that feels like the producer throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.

This is all a lot of fun, but the song’s sweeping chorus gives Bibbidi needed focus. Yes, it’s about as cheesy as you could imagine, but the melody itself throws back to what made frothy disco classics like Dancing Queen and You Should Be Dancing so inescapable. The brass-and-strings-heavy mix blends perfectly with the girls’ light, layered vocals, and the extended drum fill that merges this buoyant chorus with its more frenetic verses is an excellent touch. I’m not sure how much staying power the song will have compared to the group’s other material, but in the short term it’s hard to resist its sheer energy.
