Though members Zico and Park Kyung have made waves as solo artists, Block B‘s group comebacks are becoming more and more infrequent. It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost three years since they gave us a song as bright and upbeat as 2014’s HER. But with the rollicking Yesterday, they’ve finally revisited this style.

The song comes courtesy of composer Park Kyung, which marks a shift in the group’s usual Zico-produced output. It’s nice to see another member snatch the spotlight, as Block B has always been problematic when it comes to equity in individual popularity. And though one might expect a track built on playful hip-hop, Yesterday surprises with its punchy, rock-influenced swagger. It’s a tight blast of energy, kicking off with the chorus right from the start. This central hook is among the group’s most instantly catchy — its sing-song melody sticking from the very first listen. This is both a boon and a hindrance, as its repetitive simplicity may not age quite as well as their more nuanced releases.

Still, there’s no denying the potent energy that courses through the song. Block B has always been a boundary-pushing boy group, and Yesterday sounds nothing like any of their peers. Its verses still manage to weave in a heavy dose of hip-hop (some segments more effective than others), but the track is ultimately guitar-driven. It’s dependent on a punky type of charismatic delivery, underlined by a ska-influenced riff that gives it a nostalgic 90’s feel. It’s a refreshing mix, and a sound that I hope the group explores further.
