Song Review: BoA & Beatburger – Music Is Wonderful

boa-beatburger-music-is-wonderfulWhen SM Station first started, it felt primarily like a delivery method for ballads. But as the months have gone on, it’s become much more focused on EDM tracks, inviting some of the agency’s biggest artists to collaborate with DJs and dance producers. This time around, in-house collective BeatBurger is paired with k-pop royalty BoA.

Right from the over-earnest title, it’s apparent that Music Is Wonderful was designed as an uplifting ode to the very art form that gets us k-pop fans so worked up. Music is indeed wonderful, especially when it revels in its own awesomeness. As far as this actual song goes, it could have been just a bit more wonderful, but it’s definitely one of the better attempts at EDM that SM has given us. Buried within the predictable structure are some excellent segments and production touches. The choir-like backing vocals that support much of the track really bring out the sheer triumphant jubilance the song is striving for. BoA was also a brilliant choice as vocalist. Her warm, instantly recognizable tone invites the listener in immediately. I wish she was given even more to do. As with most EDM, Music forgoes a traditional chorus in favor of a surging instrumental. The song feels one bombastic hook away from being outstanding. In this case, the build is more exciting than the release.

Still, for an EDM track of this nature, there’s a lot here to love. The addition of two brief (but galvanizing) rap verses lends Music extra texture, and contrasts well with BoA’s pristine vocals. I would have loved to hear even more interplay between the two vocalists, making the song a full-on duet. My hope is that Music is the exclamation mark on the end of SM’s EDM obsession — at least for awhile. It feels like a fitting climax as we turn the page to usher in new styles and sounds from k-pop’s leading agency.
