Song Review: BoA & Beenzino – No Matter What

BoA & Beenzino - No Matter WhatSM Entertainment’s Station platform seems to have taken a turn towards the uptempo now that summer is approaching. This week’s track pairs SM royalty BoA with popular rapper Beenzino, and it’s a smart match. They’re given a somewhat generic dance track to work with, but manage to imbue it with enough of their own style to make it stand out.

No Matter What rides along a pulsing EDM/pop beat, interspersed with filtered background shouts and a fizzy, almost tropical instrumental hook. In other words, it’s the kind of song that was built for these hotter months. BoA doesn’t release music quite as frequently as she used to, but proves yet again that she still has a vital place in the industry. Her performance is somewhat restrained here, tied to a chirpy melody that doesn’t allow for much vocal experimentation. Nevertheless, she carries it off beautifully, her characteristically light tone offering a welcome sense of comfort and familiarity.

Beenzino’s always worked well as a featured artist, and his verse compliments BoA’s main melody in all the right ways, despite their voices being quite different from one another. Though the song never really explodes or amounts to much more than a pleasant summertime bop, his off-kilter, charismatic performance provides a much needed climax. I kind of wish he was featured more heavily throughout. A true dance/hip-hop duet between these two would be a lot of fun, and give No Matter What an added jolt of individuality.
