Song Review: Cherry Bullet – Really Really

After debuting in January, Cherry Bullet have made a quick return with new single Really Really (네가 참 좋아). Q&A became something of a sleeper hit, establishing a bright, rhythmic sound for the group. But, the real test comes now, as the girls try to secure their success with a track that betters their previous work. With that in mind, Really feels pretty underwhelming. However, its synth-sprinkled production maintains their cheerful style.

Really Really is all about the good vibes. From its opening moment, the instrumental beams with joyful electronics and addictive energy. We’re ushered in by a synth refrain that will eventually take the place of a melodic chorus. As far as EDM-style drops go, at least this one’s bubbly! It doesn’t make up for the fact that Really leans too heavily on its pre-chorus instead of fleshing out a more compelling hook. What we get instead is essentially a repetition of the same line with slight variations.

When we finally do get more melodic complexity during Really’s climax, it comes a little too late. The song’s final thirty seconds are pretty enjoyable, and hint at what the track might have been if given a more daring road map. This sense of missed potential also extends to the verses, which aim for quirky Twice-esque sing-talk but mostly misfire. With a group configuration as large as Cherry Bullet’s, it can be difficult to find something for every member to do. Unfortunately, individual voices and personalities are wiped clean by Really’s restrictive structure. The song is still a nice slice of summertime pop, but it could have been so much more.

  1. I knew I could count on you to capture exactly how I feel about this one. I should’ve probably not read this until after I had written my thoughts but I agree so much with what you’ve said. It does feel summery but it’s kinda forgettable and feels like something we’ve heard before that’s done better. At times they felt very TWICE in nature which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After Q&A I was a little let down tbh. In other related news will AOA make a comeback? TBD ….

  2. What this really needed was a great verse backing track along the lines of Gugudan’s “The Boots” verses or SNSD TTS’s “Holler.” As it is, I find it difficult to understand why anyone would write those verses… that way? There’s something really wrong there. I also refuse to believe that they waited until the last 30 seconds to introduce the actual engaging melody line. Like, why? Would you do that? I want to enjoy the decent bits of this song, but honestly most of it leaves me wholly befuddled.

  3. I think the song is really cute, and not aegyo too cute.

OK, so lets talk candy. Candy is so country-specific. (even the UK vs US vs Canada.) Have you ever wandered down the candy aisle of the Asian market, and wondered, “what is this, is this really edible, how sweet is it going to be, and is it secretly squid flavored”? This song is like a basic hard candy, super sweet but soda pop flavored, and not too weird for us foreigners to try for $2 a bag.

    The video is cute too.

That said, I am not in their target demographic market.

  5. So far, Cherry Bullet and DreamNote seem to be competing for the saccharine fueled high energy ‘tween beat crowd and I’m not complaining. I like both groups even though I need a tranquilizer dart to the neck after watching videos from either group.

I remember listening to “Q&A” and thinking, “That’s a fun little toe-tapper” and then I discovered incredibly charming B-track “Violet” (from the same release) and I began to think that this is a group I could completely fall for. “Really Really” has me back to thinking “toe-tapper” instead of “showstopper”.
