After debuting with a synth-driven, cutesy track, Cosmic Girls released a second music video for follow-up Catch Me. This one is clearly designed to be a showcase for dance skills and attitude, as the song is far more hip-hop influenced. It’s an interesting counterpoint to MoMoMo, proving the girls’ versatility but bringing up questions as to what their overall concept will be.

The spare, elastic beat doesn’t offer much room for the group to display vocals, but Catch Me is a surprisingly hard-hitting departure from most rookie girl groups this year. The delivery is still light and girly, especially during the playground chant of a build that ushers in the simple, but completely infectious hook. Amidst the usual hip-hop clatter, there’s some interesting, dynamic synth work going on. The fuzzy brushes of electronics during the hook recall early f(x), though in slightly less experimental form.

On the mini album itself (which is actually pretty strong), Catch Me immediately follows MoMoMo. I feel like Starship has set up the group with a bit of an identity crisis. They’re large in number, and like other groups of their size, they’ve been portioned into units. In this way, they may pursue a multi-pronged path like boy group Seventeen, but at this point it doesn’t seem particularly clear. Maybe they’ll settle into a sound somewhere between these two singles, but they’re going to need to carve out an identity for themselves in order to compete with the many successful rookie groups currently on the scene.
