Sometimes time away can be a good thing. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is a cliché for a reason. Last year, DAY6 were incredibly active in Korea, releasing two songs a month as part of their Every DAY6 project. But though this resulted in some exciting music during the first half of the year, the band retreated to a more generic, ballad-heavy sound for the latter half of the project. With some time to recharge, new single Shoot Me brings back the daring side of DAY6’s music.
It’s been awhile since the guys have incorporated this much electronic influence into their classic rock sound, and Shoot Me’s experimental verses benefit from this diversity in sound. Opening with what sounds like a distorted heartbeat, the first verse goes on to play with percussive shifts and a dramatic injection of synth strings. But the second verse really gives keyboardist Wonpil a chance to show off. Atmospheric electronics and filtered backing vocals abound, culminating in a brief mid-song breakdown that keeps things dynamic without totally throwing off the overall structure.
Shoot Me’s chorus is more straightforward, but is elevated by its aggressive “bang bang” refrain. It cuts through the melody with the sudden shock of a real gunshot, and only grows more combative as the song goes on. The rousing hair-metal chant that fuels Shoot Me‘s bridge is even better, adding a welcome dose of theatricality to an already exciting climax. This is the DAY6 I’d been missing for most of last year, and the kind of bold song that will help them stand out among their idol rock group peers.

Day6 is one of the few groups I’m willing to pull an all-nighter for in order to hear their new songs as they come out, and I definitely don’t regret it! They’re my favorite group of all time, and have been since I found them (without going into too much detail, while a few of their songs weren’t really things I loved right off the bat, I can only name one single Day6 song that I dislike- and that may even be too strong). They have this vocal blend that really can’t be recreated anywhere else, and it works incredibly well with the harder sound and interesting instrumental they pushed in Shoot Me. Have you had the chance to listen to the rest of the album? I’ve found it very solid and consistent, and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!

I’ve only listened to it one time through, but it already rivals Daydream as my favorite album of theirs.
I’m in love with the triple punch of Somehow, Feeling Good and Talking To — but that’s not too surprising since this kind of surging, anthemic rock is right in my wheelhouse 🙂

I love their more aggressive sounding tracks, like this one, How Can I Say and to some extent, I Wait… I haven’t listened to the rest of the album yet, though

Day6 is rare to have 4 vocalists each with distinctive tonal quality but work well together or as contast. In the beginning they didn’t blend well but now they can sing cohesively in each song. All the live singing/playing is paying off. They sound better, more stable, and seem a lot more confident on stage. YoungK is super versatile, having a good range and smmoth switch from head to chest and vice versa. Love this new EP, all gems.
