In a July that has seen an unprecedented amount of downbeat, forgettable comebacks so far, DAY6 have returned to inject some life into the month. We last heard from the band in December, when they released the excellent Days Gone By. December releases tend to fade from memory this time of year, but Days still casts a long shadow to overcome. New single Time Of Our Life (한 페이지가 될 수 있게) can’t quite match its same melodic heights, but its rollicking rock energy is a great match for the summer.
With some help from longtime JYP composer Hong Jisang, the guys have crafted one of their most anthemic pieces of power pop yet. Time Of Our Life wastes no time getting going, heralded by piano and skittering percussion before the raucous guitar comes in. From here, the energy rarely lets up.
Life’s straightforward verses remind me of guitar-fueled pop anthems of the past, driven by an inexhaustible beat and soaring melodic lines. This isn’t anything we haven’t heard before, but it’s been a great deal of time since K-pop has opted for such an uncluttered, widescreen approach. The song’s driving chorus feels more standard for DAY6, guided by heavy drums and a forceful vocal. I love the chanted post-chorus hook, though. It ties everything together with a hefty surge of pop power. I have a feeling that this is the kind of song that will only improve on further listens. It’s an instant boost of vitality during these summer doldrums, and that’s enough to make it an easy July highlight.

First of all, I love it. I also loved Days Gone By, which was one of my best of 2019 despite being released in December.
What follows are observations and quibbles.
The rhythm of the vocal of the verses resembles Dance Dance.
I wish the chorus was not so beat heavy, eighth note, kick-snare-hat heavy noise for every time the chorus comes around. Or save that for the last iteration of the chorus, perhaps a repeat ending chorus, because the song just seems to end – it could have used a good outro, or a One More Time With Feeling chorus.
The guys have good vocals, but they are not give enough free space to shine with all that noise going on. So if you reduce the chorus drum noise, free up the vocal, and maybe work in more guitar riffs! because as far as I can hear the guitar doesn’t do much but rapid power chords.
The piano also gets a bit lost after the awesome start.
Perhaps live, they could expand a section after each post-chorus where each instrument gets 16 or 32 bars to do a solo bit.

Another crazily solid album if you ask me. I don’t even think it’s just my bias talking when I endlessly praise Day6- I really haven’t been disappointed by them yet. This isn’t my favorite title track nor my favorite album, but I enjoy the whole package quite a bit, with For Me being my standout album track on the first listen. Now if only they would go on tour anywhere near me…
