Ever since their debut in late 2016, The East Light have provided a steady stream of music in collaboration with their producer Midas-T. Taking into account pre-releases, title tracks and follow-up promotions, the group has never truly gone on hiatus in almost two years. This unending schedule would be tiring if the music wasn’t always so fun. Ever since hearing Never Thought (I’d Fall In Love) as part of their most recent album, I hoped that it would be promoted in some way.

Sometimes, the best instrumentals are simple and classic. Never Thought’s chugging power pop guitar riff has been used for decades, but it’s never unwelcome. It’s only a note or so away from being a complete rip-off of The Kinks’ You Really Got Me, but in an age of recycled tropical beats and EDM drops, at least the guys are cribbing from a different source.

Laid on top of this addictive guitar-driven beat is a gutsy melody that would feel right at home on a country rock record. Again, it’s not an original idea, but feels fresh and daring within k-pop’s landscape. The guys tackle this hodgepodge of sounds with the sense of unbridled fun they’ve become known for. In particular, vocalist Eunsung is quickly blossoming into a charismatic front man with seemingly limitless potential. The group hasn’t yet received the kind of widespread attention their music deserves, but slow and steady wins the race. If they can keep the quality up and the promotions steady, they should be able to carve out their own niche within k-pop’s fickle confines.
