Song Review: Eddy Kim – Paldangdam (ft. Beenzino)

eddy kim - paldangdamPaldang is a Dam built on Korea’s Han River, but in this funky new single from Eddy Kim and Beenzino, it’s simply a roadblock for girls to “rush over like water” on their way to a good time. The single cover even depicts a waterfall of long, dyed blue hair. As metaphors go, it’s basically a clever way to say that Eddy Kim’s so cool he needs to build a dam around himself to keep out all the would-be beaus and find the real treasure buried deeper in the river.

As far as style goes, Paldangdam finds Eddy Kim taking his usual acoustic sound and ripping it to shreds. In its place, we have a beat-driven pop dance track with strong hip hop elements courtesy of guest rapper Beenzino. The track makes heavy use of disco rhythm guitar, which seems to be a trend recently. I feel like half a dozen songs I’ve written about in the past couple of weeks have taken the same instrumental approach. Here, it’s tied to a melody that feels pretty idiosyncratic, but in a very westernized, college-rock way.

Set side by side with other kpop, Paldangdam certainly stands out. The melody and production have a loose feel, highlighted by Kim’s varied vocal approach and the complimentary tone of Beenzino’s sections. The two have a nice interplay throughout the entire running time, making this feel more like a duet than a typical featuring. Along with nearly every big track released this week, Paldangdam‘s sunny, upbeat nature ensures that spring has come early this year.
