With each song released through SM’s Music Station, it’s becoming more apparent that the platform is tailored to solo or duet ballads. This makes sense, as the songs aren’t promoted through performances or appearances, and it would be counter-intuitive to waste a full-fledged concept or choreography on something that is essentially a bonus treat for fans.

Even so, when Music Station was first announced, I never thought it would incorporate artists from outside SM Entertainment. But Eric Nam is hardly an unknown quantity, and it makes sense to pair him with Red Velvet’s Wendy, who lived internationally for much of her adolescence and likely shares some cultural touchstones with American-born Nam. The two make a light and innocent vocal duo, imbuing Spring Love with a harmony so cute it’s nearly saccharine. Wendy takes the lead, with Nam supporting every lyric in a softer, more passive tone.

Like Taeyeon’s Rain from a few weeks ago, the song itself is entirely forgettable, the memory of its melody essentially dissipating the moment it ends. What we get instead is a pleasant acoustic number that goes down easy. It demands nothing of the listener beyond reclining to enjoy its charms. Because of this, it feels like the perfect kind of track to play in the background on a spring or summer’s afternoon. It’s not a song that’s likely to turn anyone off, but it’s not one demanding repeat listens, either.
