Amidst everything going on with his band-mate T.O.P, G-Dragon made the right decision in releasing the emotive Untitled, 2014 as the first single from his new mini album. But this being G-Dragon, we knew we’d be getting at least one hip-hop hype track before the album campaign was over. The eye-catchingly titled Bullshit is the latest in a string of similarly fashioned songs that hearken back to the playful sound of 2012’s One of a Kind.

Like that now-classic single, Bullshit succeeds on the inventiveness of its production and the undeniable charisma of its performer. Had anyone else tackled this track, I’d probably have quite a few negative things to say. The main “bow wow wow” hook, for instance, feels derivative and lazy. Quite frankly, G-Dragon is better (and much more creative) than this. And yet, it all comes together somehow to result in a ridiculously addictive piece of personality-fueled hip-hop.

Bullshit‘s nimble beat is in constant flux, moving from its verses’ aloof skitter to the resounding clatter of discordant synth that drives the main hook. There’s a brilliant bit of percussion at the end of each chorus that sounds as if it’s playing catch up before launching into the next segment. Sudden turns like these keep the production sounding fresh throughout. By the time the beat takes on a more tribal pattern for the song’s middle eight, Bullshit has well and truly won me over — even despite its weaknesses. The heavily repeated “개소리야” vocal sample is the track’s best (and most memorable) piece of production, adding a bit of eccentricity to the otherwise conventional chorus. And then of course we have G-Dragon himself, who imbues every line with a heaping dose of magnetism. The energetic pre-chorus is the most obvious example of this, acting as the rousing, convivial centerpiece within Bullshit‘s maelstrom of tonal shifts.
