Song Review: K.Will, Junggigo, Jooyoung & Brother Su – Cook For Love

K.Will, Junggigo, Jooyoung & Brother Su - Cook For LoveSometimes you know exactly how a song is going to sound before you even start listening to it. Cook For You brings together Starship Entertainment’s roster of male soloists. K.Will is known for his ballads and midtempos, Junggigo is most famous for being Soyou’s duet partner on the mega-hit Some, and Jooyoung and Brother Su have had more modest r&b hits. Basically, all four trade in the same style of music, and certainly complement each other because of this.

Unfortunately, this midtempo r&b music is a style that I’m not all that interested in, but I’ll try to look at Cook For Love with unbiased eyes. Like Some and dozens before it, the track employs an easy, laid-back groove that practically demands the listener nod along. And while I’m not a huge fan of any of the four artists, the vocal effect here is actually greater than the sum of its parts. The guys have a brilliant harmony and blend, which is exploited to full effect during the hook. The sentiment of the lyrics is totally cheesy, but the vocalization is funky and light. It grows more addictive the more you hear it.

This all results in Cook For Love making more of a splash than I would have thought. It’s still not a song that demands the forefront, but it feels perfectly positioned to act as a sort of OST to all those little moments in life. Those who look forward to this more laid-back style of kpop will absolutely love it.
