Six weeks after coming back with double title tracks, Lee Hi is wrapping up her Seoulite promos with the release of a final single, My Star. The song sees a return to the retro soul-pop she’s known so well for, but how does it match up with her material from March?

Pretty well, actually. My Star isn’t going to light anything on fire. It’s a fairly basic, lightweight representation on the genre. But, we know that Lee Hi can deliver on dramatic, soaring vocals. It’s refreshing to hear something that represents a more laidback, fun side to her persona and utilizes the quirkier aspects of her voice. The track opens immediately with a bass line that’ll be familiar to anyone who’s listened to old school Motown or 60’s girl groups, before launching into the song’s simple hook.

My Star has a bit of an odd structure, in the sense that it’s kind of hard to tell what’s meant to be the chorus and what’s meant to be the verses. There are certainly two distinct melodic segments, but neither really takes precedence over the other. For better or worse, this gives the track a slight throwaway feel. But rather than being a detriment, I think this actually works in My Star‘s favor. It’s not the kind of song that makes you wait for some grand, cathartic chorus, choosing instead to invite you to nod along with the easy melody and sunny, blues-influenced guitar and brass. All in all, it’s a satisfying capper on Hi’s 2016 promotions. Hopefully we won’t have to wait another three years for her to release another album.
