The Legend – Crush On You

the legend - crush on youThe Legend is one of those kpop boy groups who just hasn’t been able to establish a solid sound for themselves. This has caused my opinion of their music to veer pretty wildly from release to release. I loved their Shadow from last summer, but thought November’s Nail was a total bore.

Luckily, Crush On You ups the tempo and fun-factor quite a bit. It’s a funky, brass-fueled track with an easy chorus. It feels very much like a summer throwback song, with a touch of 70’s roller rink pop thrown in. And while it’s not the type of song I’m likely to seek out on a regular basis, I  wouldn’t skip it if it were to show up on a random playlist either.

There are some nice little production choices here and there, like the high-pitched echo of the “sound up” refrain in the chorus, as well as the aforementioned brass, which gives the song the oomph it needs in the verses. If anything, I wish that the melody let the guys display their personality just a little bit more. As fun as it is, the concept feels a little perfunctory for them, especially after hearing their darker material in the past. Still, there’s no denying that it’s a fresh, enjoyable entry in their discography.
