Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of April 2015

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

Which month do you want to see next?

April 2015 Overall Thoughts

April of 2015 was a pretty average month for releases, though it resulted in a couple of notable tracks. Chief among these is BTS’ I Need U, which marked the first music win for the group and acted as a catalyst for the incredible success they’d see over the next few years. Surprisingly, I remember being disappointed with the track at first. I’d gotten so used to boisterous, hip-hop BTS that I wasn’t ready for something different. That feeling didn’t last long, though, as I Need U has gone on to be (probably) my favorite title track from the guys.

This month also saw EXID prove that their late-2014 mega-success wasn’t a fluke. In fact, it was a strong month all around for the ladies. We’ve got the debut of Oh My Girl and The Ark (though that second group wouldn’t last longer than one single), and tracks that fed on the lingering success of popular competition series Unpretty Rapstar. Girls’ Generation also delivered an underrated digital single, released simultaneously in Korea and Japan.

Though it didn’t quite make my top three, I want to give a special shout-out to Park Jinyoung’s Who’s Your Mama, which became the nation’s guilty pleasure for a few weeks. It’s an utterly ridiculous song, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t smile a little every time it comes on.

  1. .

I’ve got Mamamoo “Ahh Oop” > Oh My Girl “Cupid”.
And also props to JYP for “Who’s your Mama”. He did a hysterical video with Conan O’Brien a year later.
