Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of October 2013

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

October 2013 Overall Thoughts

October is often a strong month for K-pop, and 2013 was no different. In addition to my top three, which are all absolute classics, the honorable mentions list is beyond solid.

There were some real standouts during this month. On the girl group side, I absolutely love Bestie’s Love Options and Nine Muses’ Gun, which both contributed to 2013’s Brave Brothers and Sweetune dominance. Seriously, those two producers owned this year. And when it comes to boy groups, A-Jax’s Snake, Boys Republic’s You Are Special and N-Sonic’s Run & Run are particular highlights, each bringing that trademark 2013 bombast I tend to love so much.

But, October wasn’t just about the groups. It was a strong month for A-list soloists, with IU and Kim Jaejoong each releasing highly-successful albums. And, we were even treated to a mixed-gender duo in the form of Troublemaker. I remember their Now (There Is No Tomorrow) making a major impact on me back when it was released.

October also saw the debut of boy group Topp Dogg. I don’t really care for that particular song, but they’d go on to release superior material in the next two years.

  1. i think all 4 of 9Muses songs (Glue, Dolls, Gun, and Wild) should at least be in the honorable mention, if not one of them being a tops….they released 4 great songs in 2013.

    SHINee for the win.

Let us all also praise the wonder that is SHINee “One Minute Back” off the same album. It never had a video but they did go on the music shows with performances.

    • SHINee were absolutely out of their minds for 2013. The entire Misconceptions series and then they also dropped a mini full of absolute BANGERS. One Minute Back is also my favorite. It’s just such an interesting song.

  3. NUMBER NINE is such a fantastic song! I became a K-pop fan at the end of 2018 and if there’s one thing I wish it’s that I would have become a fan earlier. In my opinion, 2010-2015 was the golden era for girl groups. The musical direction and the concepts of the songs from groups like 2NE1, SISTAR, SECRET or T-ara is something which I dearly miss in today’s K-pop landscape and I really hope that these concepts will make a comeback once.
