Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of June 2012

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

June 2012 Overall Thoughts

Okay, looking back at June 2012 just makes me feel depressed. There were more stone-cold classics in this one month that the entirety of 2020 so far. What a massive change K-pop has undergone in these eight years! Back then, melody was king. Songs had immense choruses. Trap and tropical were nonexistent, allowing producers to be musically creative and resulting in a diverse selection of sounds.

Following up on the utter transcendence of May (which gave us the best K-pop song of all time), June 2012 was just stuffed with excellent music. I mean, the fact that I’m relegating amazing tracks like Electric Shock to “honorable mention” status is quite shocking.

This month saw some great debuts too, though neither of these groups went on to join K-pop’s a-list. Even so, both A-Jax and Cross Gene ended up delivering some great material, even if it mostly went unloved by the general public. 2AM’s Jo Kwon also debuted as a soloist with a fun, upbeat album that’s miles away from the ballads we know him for now.

June gave us lots of strong girl group comebacks as well, from After School’s Flashback to T-ara’s Day By Day (and its ambitious music video). Special shout-out to Love Is Energy, by Chi Chi. I doubt many have heard of it, but it’s a total 2012-era jam. Ditto for F.I.X.’s She’s My Girl.

My top three is as strong as it gets. Legendary songs – all of them. I can’t even tell you how much I love the top two, in particular. Jeez, K-pop, when are you gonna get back to this kind of consistent excellence? Will you ever?

  2. What a month! Mine would be:
    1. Sistar – Loving U (still the definitive summer b0p for me! )
    2. f(x) – Electric Shock (my 2nd fav f(x) song, 1st would be RPPP)
    3. After School – Flashback (my 2nd fav After School song, 1st would be Shamp00)

A veryyy close 4th place would be Big Bang’s “Monster”. For some reason I never really got into Bigbang (or any other artists under YG ent.), but there’s no doubt that “Monster” is still an excellent song. Peak Bigbang if you ask me.
