Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of October 2011

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

October 2011 Overall Thoughts

After September’s epic assault of classics, it’s surprising that October of 2011 had anything left to give. But, while not quite as stuffed as its predecessor, this month was also very solid. Led by marquee releases from acts like Girls’ Generation and Epik High’s Tablo, October also delivered some notable debuts from MYNAME and M.I.B.

When it came to picking my favorite song of the month, my bias toward Sweetune definitely played a part. By this time in 2011, the production team was on an unstoppable streak. It’s staggering to think that all of these classic tracks came out within months of each other. What a renaissance era for K-pop! October also marked the first time that renowned American producer Teddy Riley dipped his feet in the K-pop industry, a move that would continue to bear fruit for SM Entertainment in the years to come.

Picks two and three are also incredibly strong, and could have each taken the top spot during different months. VERY close honorable mentions go to MYNAME’s stellar Message, Tablo’s Tomorrow (with its awesome Taeyang feature) and the explosive Be Quiet from K-pop legend Kim Won Sun.

  1. Yes, after a chock-a-block Sept 2011, the only song I downloaded from Oct2011 is Orange Caramel.

I hadn’t heard MYNAME “Message” before – it is a solid song, especially for a debut.

The Secret song sounds like a frantic version of the retro 60’s sound. Perhaps too frantic.

GG The Boys = not my thing. The topic always seemed so high school to me. Legs eye candy on super display. It is interesting to compare the skinny skinny GG legs to the much fuller more realistic Secret legs. GG look like they could use a sandwich or three.
