Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of September 2011

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

September 2011 Overall Thoughts

Looking back, September of 2011 might have been one of the strongest months in all of K-pop history, at least where I’m concerned. My honorable mentions alone include several stone cold classics. The fight for my number one spot is a battle royale, pitting two legendary, ten-out-of-ten singles against each other. Seriously, it seems wrong that either of these songs would play runner up in any month, but in the end I had to give the slightest of edges to my ultimate bias group. You’ll understand, I hope!

Third place was even more difficult. September presented a handful of contenders that would easily take my top spot in a less competitive month. Ultimately, I went with the track that I’ve actually played the most. Seemed fair.

With that said, I want to highlight how much I LOVE the epic majesty of Brown Eyed Girls’ Sixth Sense, Girl’s Day’s goofy K-pop-meets-ABBA Don’t Flirt, the quirky bubblegum of B1A4’s Beautiful Target, and the hard-hitting electro of U-Kiss’s Neverland. My god… what a month! It was musically diverse, inventive as hell and right at the apex of peak-Sweetune goodness.

If that wasn’t enough, September offered the underrated solo debut of SS501’s Kim Kyu-jong and the classic Japanese TVXQ single B.U.T (BE-AU-TY). JYJ also hit us with their best (and most commercially successful) Korean single.

  1. 1) KARA “Step” *
    2) BEG “Sixth Sense” *
    3) In the interest of fairness, insert smelly, cootie-riddled boy band here…

    * Ask me tomorrow and the orders of 1 and 2 might be reversed. Yeah, I really like “Sixth Sense” THAT much.
