Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of November 2010

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

November 2010 Overall Thoughts

Ballads, ballads, ballads. SO many ballads this month. Seriously, apart from the major idol group releases, K-pop was swimming in melodramatic tears this month. I guess that’s not unusual for November, but with K-pop’s massive idol surge still a year or two away, the industry was just a very different landscape.

Luckily, November still offered some definite highlights. We’ve got F.Cuz’s Midnight Sun, with is a total stunner that fully embraces the dramatic side of K-pop. It’s criminally underrated, and if you haven’t yet heard it, I guarantee you’ll be entertained. Then, we’ve got the always-reliable Kara + Sweetune combo. For me, Jumping falls *just* outside the group’s very best work, which means it’s still better than 90% of its peers.

I’m not even a little ashamed to include a cheesy CF song in my top three. G-Dragon’s shill for online marketplace Gmarket may be “sell, sell, and sell some more,” but it’s also a ton of fun. That throwback electro beat is just irresistible. Plus, Gmarket happens to be my go-to online K-pop shop, though I’ve yet to write a song about it…

Honorable mentions are sparse this month because, well… ballads. But, Beast and Orange Caramel both deserve shout outs. Neither song is among my favorite from these groups, but they’re still enjoyable.

  1. Oh you like it? Oh you love it? It’s the brand! I’m the trend!

I was totally in love with song when it came out. It’s so silly and fun, and really a perfect pairing for them both. Even if it’s a CF song, it’s a good time!

Seeing your top 3 from such a long time ago is really wild. The landscape was so different then. The groups, the music, the trends… it feels like a totally different universe at this point.

  3. FCuz for the win. Its so much DRAMA, so theatrical, so much (=sob!=) over emotion, so very appealing. Its like the sonic sequel to some of my favorite TVXQ, and the sonic prequels to some of the my favorite ZEA hits like Ghost of the Wind.

FCuz are one of those groups which have just fallen through the cracks of memory, alas. Most of us international fans only know them from the KVille youtube channel which samples the awesome synth hook from FCuz’s 2014 One Love on their weekly charts. Wait for it, wait for it, there it is at 0:24.Oh yes that, you have heard that before. The rest of the song is good too, with good vocals.
