Since the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!
September 2010 Overall Thoughts
As September can sometimes be, September of 2010 was pretty sparse on releases. Luckily, the comebacks that did happen were quite strong.
The month was dominated by YG’s 2NE1, who released their first full album with a three day blitz of title tracks. YG used to do this quite often, and I kind of miss having an entire week of new releases from one artist. For me, the quality of these singles varied, but Can’t Nobody remains one of the group’s defining works.
My favorite release from this month is Beast’s Breath. This was actually one of the very first K-pop tracks that caught my interest. I don’t listen to it all that much these days, but that electro breakdown is still iconic. What a timeless jam!
September also delivered solid follow-ups from BoA, Miss A and a quick comeback from Son Dam Bi. It marked the (pre) debut of the underrated Co-Ed School, who paved the way for other mixed gender groups like KARD and Checkmate, along with the full debut of rapper San E.
Honorable Mentions
Co-Ed School – Too Late (video)
Miss A – Breathe (video)
San E – Tasty San (video)
Son Dam Bi – dB Rider (video)
Trax – Oh! My Goddess (video)
2NE1 – Clap Your Hands / Go Away (video / video)
I Really Love Breathe! It’s one of my favorite Beast songs and I’d certainly rate it either a 9.25 or a 9.5.
Yes, Other songs also exist this month.

Off-Topic: Nick, are you planning to review Boku Wo Sensou (My War)? If not, what do you think of it. For me, it is probably my favorite of the year so far, and Kbopped and Deforested gave it highly positive reviews too.

This song is just epic! Normally, I don’t like anime songs because of their tendency of not fleshing out their melodies, but this song is just an activation of choirs! Absolutely epic, and that instrumental? Totally engaging.

I know, I love it! Plus, the lyrics could be made into a movie. They are also thought-provoking. I don’t think I’ll ever watch Attack on Titan, but this song is such a masterpiece.

Pretty cool! Not planning on reviewing much anime music (unless it’s by acts I already review), but it’s always fun to see how dramatic and theatrical it can get.

It makes sense that you wouldn’t, but there are some real gems of songs out there in the world of anime OPs!

I haven’t actually watched AoT but this fits the epic and dark image of the series perfectly.
Now that we’re on the topic of anime songs, I would like to recommend Sangatsu no Lion’s openings – yes, all of them. They stand on their own in my opinion, with soaring choruses. This one especially: “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRWQckbQ9tQ”

I actually don’t ever plan on seeing AoT, but I love how good the opening theme is.
Wow, thanks for the recommendation. Probably one of my favorite Bump of Chicken songs.

This is a group I’ve always wanted to explore further. I love his voice.
But that band name… it just sounds so gross to me for some reason…

Same. I am basically a veg guy, so the name bugs me often.
But then again, I currently am geeking out over a song called ‘Let’s Music’ from a band called Sexy Zone, so that is that.

So happy to see this! I fell in love with their music, and found I enjoy a lot of their songs.
I know right, the name reminds me of when the hairs on your skin stand up and you get chicken skin.

While I don’t really vibe with the openings, I can’t recommend San Gatsu No Lion enough. Such a gorgeous show.
And in terms of Bump of Chicken, I highly recommend Hello, World!

Second this! Sangatsu depicts struggles in life beautifully and with nuance. It hits hard (for me, anyway) but it has a sweet and hopeful tone overall. A comforting show on a deep level.

I didn’t know Can’t Nobody came out in 2010! Definitely a 2NE1 classic still.
