Looking Back: The Top Three K-Pop Songs of April 2010

Monthly Round-UpSince the start of The Bias List in January 2016, I’ve always looked back at my three favorite title tracks by K-pop artists each month. Now, it’s time to look even further into the past, one month at a time. And, yes, the top three rankings count toward The Bias List’s personal artist scorecard!

April 2010 Overall Thoughts

Oftentimes when writing these “looking back” posts, I find myself longing for K-pop of the past. But this time, I’m feeling pretty thankful for how robust the industry is in 2021. April of 2010 was just barren, and we don’t really see that any more.

I suppose it could be argued that idol acts were scared away by releases from two of the era’s legends (Rain and Lee Hyori), but even so this was a month with hardly any notable releases.

So, let’s talk about those legends. Rain returned with the iconic Love Song and the less-iconic (but still great) Hip Song. The latter never received an official music video, but it was promoted as the official Korean OST to the 2010 Karate Kid remake. Lee Hyori also promoted multiple tracks this month, though I only really care for the fiery Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Elsewhere, Beast and U-KISS each promoted so-so follow-ups to their hit singles Shock and Bingeul Bingeul. Both songs are solid, but not outstanding. Neither have aged very well, either. I feel largely the same about 2PM’s Without U. It was a deserved hit, but very much “of its era.”

My number one spot goes to a group who were at their prime this year. However, if I’m being honest, my actual favorite song of April 2010 is the Sweetune-produced Magic from Brown Eyed Girls. It was never given a music video, so it didn’t qualify for this ranking, but it’s yet another great 2010 Sweetune classic.

  1. Magic is cute but I ALWAYS preferred Madonna of the two tracks lol

And man CCBB is such a good title track, the album was good too (even with all the plagiarism scandals that plagued it)

  2. I ain’t got nuttin for April 2010. zippo. zilch. nada. the big donut.

Meanwhile in 2021, contemporary kpop is so oversupplied that the smaller groups are disbanding every week. Enoi was this past weekend – I liked their “Cheeky” from this time last year. This is not unsurprising, given how steep the popularity drop-off is after the big 10 or 20 acts in the top tier of kpop. Also no money from fan meetings this year due to coronavirus.
