Buried Treasure: B1A4 – I Didn’t See It

b1a4 I didn't see itMost of the time, a kpop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-side tracks deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of kpop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Now that B1A4’s Jinyoung is finally getting recognition as a top songwriter via Produce 101, I have this fantasy that when the group makes their inevitable comeback, they’re going to see a surge of renewed popularity. Though they’re certainly not unknown, I still feel like B1A4 is one of the most underrated groups in all of Korea. In fact, when they quietly released their third Japanese album a couple weeks ago, no one even made mention of it. Granted, there are only two new songs included, but still!

I Didn’t See It (モッポンゴヤ~見なかったことに) is one of those two new tracks, and is a typically gorgeous pop composition from Jinyoung. It’s a bit on the moodier side for the group, similar in tone to tracks like Tried To Walk. The surging mix of flute, acoustic guitar, drums and strings supplies an impressive sense of propulsion, but it’s the understated vocal delivery that really sends it over the edge. Jinyoung’s songwriting always hits big pop moments, but layers a bunch of sneakier hooks on top. He’s also known for bringing his tracks to a climax with what I like to call a “second chorus” to lift the song in its final seconds. This is true for almost all of B1A4’s singles, and it works beautifully here, too. It’s another slam dunk for the group.
