Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
Though completely solid, The Boyz’ new mini album continues to exacerbate an issue I’ve had with their music since debut. Cre.ker Entertainment tends to stuff their albums with too many slow and mid-tempo tracks — especially for a group with such a big, performance-oriented configuration. Like all of their work, Dreamlike is largely a front-loaded affair, opening big before pulling back. Title track D.D.D is an obvious standout, but I think I like Complete Me even better.
I can see why D.D.D was chosen as the title track. Its structure lends itself to a more dynamic live performance. But, much like b-side Clover this April, Complete Me would have made for a stronger choice. It’s a more cohesive piece, tied together by a funky electro beat that matches the summer season well. It never loses momentum the way D.D.D does, and climaxes in a knockout chorus. I adore the melody here. It’s laid-back and breezy but at the same time sharp and polished. The guys’ layered vocals sound great, riding the rhythm with effortless groove. This is the style that The Boyz should be filling entire albums with. It makes them stand out among their peers, and deftly balances youthful brightness and cool maturity.

Though this one’s not quite as great as “Clover,” I totally agree. I can see why these songs aren’t being chosen as title tracks, but they do suit The Boyz remarkably well.

At this point it feels like The Boyz are trying to make some kind of statement about how public friendly music isn’t always the best by releasing “safe” title tracks that are clearly outshone by their B-sides.
