A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
WJSN have a reputation for standout b-sides, making it unfortunate their latest album is so short. We’re overdue for another full-length, especially given their success on Queendom. Luckily, Sequence is all killer, no filler. Even Aura sounds better within the context of WJSN’s musical universe.
Done would have made a great title track, harnessing WJSN’s strengths while pushing their sound in new directions. It’s closer to a straight-up dance song than much of their material, pulsing along a thump of electronic bass and prominent kick. After an atmospheric verse, the beat drops and never lets up. I’ve been longing for K-pop groups to collaborate with international DJs like Sigala and Alok, and I feel like Done is what that collaboration might sound like. Gone are the fitful tempo-shifts favored by many idol groups. The song simply gets going and fulfills its promise to the end.
English lyrics can be a tricky proposition when it comes to K-pop, but the empowering hook here works very well. WJSN have been in the business for six years now, and it’s satisfying hearing them bring the confidence those years have fostered. Done is assured in both its song structure and its execution. It’s also quite catchy. This extends to a brilliant instrumental outro that evokes the sounds of Ibiza. More of this in K-pop, please!

Yes!! I was hoping for Done to be a buried treasure.
It’s completely new tupe of song for WJSN and they make it work so well.
This album kind of shows how their sound can mature and I really appreciate how they still sound like themselves doing it.

day 3 of reviewing jpop songs until nick renews the 90s jpop roadmap (im sorry for skipping yesterday, i was lazy lol). song i will be reviewing is
utakata saturday night – morning musume
this is one of my top 5 favorite morning musume songs. it takes its disco genre sound and cranks everything up to 11, from its strings to its rhythmic guitar, to the heavy use of brass, which is not uncommon in morning musume’s sound as of recent (you could hear them a lot in their song ningen kankei no way way). the melody is also perfection, relying on a chanted line that anchors the entire chorus and ending off with a “do it do it dance!” the song throughout packs in a lot of fast-paced energy that could really be used for inspiration by kpop groups that are taking on the disco genre.

Love this one too, but unfortunately it just makes me even more upset that the album is so short 😩 dreaming of another comeback this year with a full album…

Uninspired retread. Ujungs exposed after Spotify bot wipe. The only song with any imagination track 3.
Honestly, over 2 years and it’s a 3 track, not memorable, EP?

this is spectacular. between done and last sequence, i think dancefloor diva might be my favorite look for wjsn, and if they keep making music like this (and most of their last mini too) they’re sure to skyrocket up to one of my top groups.
also, i’ve heard some criticism that both last sequence and done are near-exact copies of some of their prior b-sides, namely yalla. however, yalla is an amazing song, and i would be perfectly happy for them to just churn out variations of it for the next few years.

this song has a good message but as a wjsn ult i think its kind of boring and quite generic for a wjsn bside. with there being only 2 bside tracks i was expecting more, especially with their newfound recognition at the time with winning queendom. i hope wjsn makes a comeback soon with their fun cosmic sound. fuck starshit!!!
