Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of k-pop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Towards the end of last year, I was suffering from DAY6 fatigue. New releases every single month proved to become a less exciting promotional tactic than I’d expected. But, my excitement for the group has really rebounded in 2018. Not only have they released a pair of strong Japanese singles, but their new album Shoot Me: Youth Pt. 1 is solid from start to finish. Its raucous title track was a good choice for promotions, but I think Feel Good would have made an excellent single as well.

This is the season where I’m in the mood for summer songs, and Feel Good has that classic, shimmering summer sound. DAY6 go full-on retro here, driving the track with an irresistible combination of disco strings and rhythm guitar. The vocal arrangement has a breezy quality, layering their voices for maximum effect during the standout chorus. The song reminds me of classic 80’s power pop bands like The Cars, but with enough of DAY6’s own personal style to avoid simply being a retread. It oozes the kind of effortless, carefree vibe perfect for long drives with the top down. I can almost picture the music video now. As much as I love Shoot Me, this happy, upbeat side of DAY6 has never received the level of promotion it deserves.
