Most of the time, a kpop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides and album tracks deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of kpop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

I find myself continually drawn back to DAY6’s new mini album. And, as much as I enjoy the title track, it’s the surrounding songs that have given this release its staying power. When thinking what track I wanted to feature here, I kept going back and forth between First Time and Hope, with Blood in contention as well. But, Hope slightly edges them out based on personal preference alone. I’m a sucker for propulsive, anthemic rock, and its melody is exactly that.

Not knowing much about the members, I wanted to give a special shout out to Sungjin’s commanding, gravelly vocals. I forgot to mention them in my review for Letting Go, and for me, they’re the single most distinctive aspect of the group. I’m not sure Hope is as strong a showcase for them, but he is given the chorus. Despite my love for Sungjin’s tone, I think the most engaging portion of Hope is actually Young K’s verses (starting at 0:48), delivered in emotive, fists-clenched fashion. They help to drive an already fast-paced, galvanizing melody.

Bottom line: the entire album is worth your time, but give Hope a listen if you’re not familiar with the album. I imagine it would appeal to non-kpop fans, as well.
