Most of the time, a kpop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-side tracks deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of kpop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

The very best GOT7 tracks, whether it’s A, Just Right or If You Do, have been rooted in a strong pop melody. Yes, it’s clear that they want to be considered a hip-hop group first and foremost, but hip-hop is at its strongest when it presents something unique and memorable to offset all the requisite swagger. Listening to the Turbulence album the first time through, I was pleasantly surprised at its general consistency. But when all was said and done, my biggest takeaway was the breezy pop chorus of Who’s That.

The song is certainly not one of the biggest moments on the album. In fact, it plays the role of lazy front-porch singalong, in contrast to sonically ambitious pieces like Mayday or Hard Carry. But in this way, it stands out as something musically joyful — even as its lyrics take a more fretful approach. There’s a lot of posturing that happens with k-pop boy groups, but fans are more likely to fall for them when they’re being their goofy selves. Who’s That feels like pulling back the curtain and letting GOT7 simply jam to a laidback groove, free from any constraints their image might demand of them. And then, of course, there’s that addictive chorus. It’s probably their biggest earworm since Just Right, which makes sense, since it was co-composed by the same team.
