A J-pop act’s single isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

I don’t usually post “buried treasures” for J-pop, most often because they’re not available on streaming so can’t be embedded into a review. Such was the case with Hiromitsu Kitayama’s solo debut single… until this week. I was dying to hear the coupling songs released earlier this year and stressed out when the physical singles were sold out and going for high prices on the aftermarket. Thankfully, TOBE has decided to start releasing its artists’ music digitally. Now I can share how fantastic NEØ Era is!

This follows exactly where RANSHIN left off, but may be even better. Kitayama performs this hyper-energetic rap rock sound so well. his best moments on Kis-My-Ft2 tracks tended to be within this realm, so I’m happy to see him expand on it with his solo career. NEØ Era‘s verses unfold at a breakneck pace — ultra-rhythmic and super exciting. The song lurches into some awkward pauses, but the hearty chorus brings it back with aplomb. I love the choral sound of the backing vocals, which give the hook a theatrical, rock-opera appeal. It’s a thrilling mix that reminds me of Miyavi’s music. Come to think of it, Miyavi has worked on Kis-My-Ft2’s music in the past. Maybe he and Kitayama will team up again in the future!
