A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
IVE will be releasing a music video for double title track Accendio later this month, so I’ll wait to share my thoughts on that song until then. Overall, I think their new mini album is solid and enjoyable — even if nothing compels me back for an immediate re-listen. HEYA is already aging well, and I’m curious to see if it enjoys the chart longevity of the group’s other singles.
I’ve seen some listeners point out the hyperpop influences across IVE Switch, and I hear that mainly in the b-sides. Blue Heart, in particularly, bounces along a minimalist electro thump that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Charli XCX record. It’s the speediest track on the album, which is a tempo I tend to enjoy. And even though its delivery is more subdued than steely, the melodies work very well. The pre-chorus is especially lovely, offering a calm transition into an edgier hook. IVE’s music often has a sense of aloofness that works well for them, and Blue Heart recaptures much of the energy that made Love Dive such an enduring hit.

This is my favourite bside too and in the first few hours after its release I thought it was the second best song on the album after Heya. But after a few more listens Accendio is the clear standout of the album to me. Does anyone else think the same? I haven’t seen a lot of discourse on it but I think that’s up there with their best

I’m with you on that one. Accendio wouldn’t sound out of place in SNSD’s The Boys album, it sounds like it’s from the early 2010s (which is a compliment).

and the fact that Wonyoung co-wrote the lyrics for this song just makes it a little more special than the rest…

my favorite b-side is Ice Queen, but this one has been growing on me. Accendio is my overall favorite on the album, I can’t wait for (hopefully) a music video even better than HEYA.

loll i straight up knew this would be the buried treasure for you after hearing it. Its got a nice techno-edm beat to that chorus it’s quite bold. I thought Ice Queen was also nice and that could have been here too.

this and accendio were definitely the highlights of the album.
+ not so fun fact: wonyoung wrote the lyrics for this song. it’s about having a cold/icy heart to avoid getting hurt. wonyoung said she was inspired by her work in the k-pop industry 😭

this is an amazing EP. HEYA is so bold, Accendio is Love Dive on steroids.
I personally prefer Ice Queen to Blue Heart but they are both fantastic. Many mid bands would beg for those songs as TT. RESET is harmless fun. WOW is the only weak point to me. I would have prefer a slower more atmospheric track instead but I’m sure it will play well live.

This and Ice Queen are my absolute favorites. Good on Wonyoung for writing this. It’s so catchy (and a little sad). Heya is already growing on me and I’m starting to really like Accendio (it feels like Baddie’s more melodic cousin). Definitely going to have this on in the background while I write.

I was genuinely disappointed when I first heard Heya, then I listened to the rest of the album and I’ve is now on top for me again , accendio , blue heart , and ice queen all have amazing instrumentals , they did an amazing job showcasing how the girls can harmonize with eachother and their strengths , the title track was disappointing but the rest of the album makes me excited for Ives next album🩵💙
