Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
Overall, I found IZ*ONE’s new album BlOOM*IZ to be a downgrade from last year’s super-solid HEART*IZ. Too many of the songs rely on the kind of chirpy, aegyo-baiting delivery that makes them feel more inconsequential than they should. With that said, there are a few strong hooks to be found. I love the chorus of album-closer Open Your Eyes, and Destiny is a refreshing return to the melodic Iggy/Youngbae sound that highlighted GFriend’s debut era.
However, Daydream stands heads and tails above the tracks surrounding it. IZ*ONE opt for a more refined sound here, as the song kicks up an addictive electro groove. Anchored by a strong bassline, the girls offer an airy performance that feels effortless. I particularly love the production during the chorus, which brings in some interesting percussion that dials the excitement up a notch. The instrumental continues to build as Daydream goes on, adding keys and rhythm guitar to deepen the groove. This culminates in an excellent dance break that does a good job setting up the final chorus. I wonder if a song like this would ever be considered for title track treatment. It doesn’t really fit IZ*ONE’s image or concept, but I think it would really help them stand out.

I love the vibe of this one. The moment it started it caught my interest and it’s the only track I’ve saved from the album and regularly revisit. Great choice!

Interesting point: This song only utilizes 4 members; Eunbi, Chaeyeon, Minju, and Yujin. So there’s that…

Oh wow, I didn’t know this! I can definitely hear it, though.

Yeah, Yujin get’s the lion share by a little bit. The remaining three share time equally, with Eunbi getting a little bump in time due to her vocal flourishes it the final parts of the song.

I love the song vibe and I definetly agree with the choice for buried treasure! Their songs with “Dream” on the title were definetly their best in the album.
What was you opinion on the full album overall?

Nice choice! I definitely would’ve chosen “Open Your Eyes” as my favourite, but Daydream was one of the other ones a liked the most. It seems that most WIZ*ONES have their eyes (no pun intended) on Eyes and Someday, so it’s nice to have someone favour the other tracks. I also actually found BLOOM*IZ to be a lot better than their last album, so I found it interesting that you thought the opposite.

This is album is sadly full of fillers. Daydream and Open Your Eyes are easily the standouts.

Oh, this is so much fun. I swear I am listening to a 1983 song by, say, Debarge, overdubbed with contemporary kpop girl group.
