Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of k-pop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

When looking at an album, one of the first things I do is check to see which producers worked on the tracks. There’s a shortlist of names that get me instantly excited, and Thomas Troelsen is one of them. The Danish producer doesn’t work with SM Entertainment nearly enough anymore, but his credits basically guarantee that I’m going to like a song. So, when I saw that Key’s Show Me was co-composed by Troelsen, I practically ear-marked it for “buried treasure” status before even giving it a listen.

My prediction came true, as the song is the kind of funky dance-pop I’ve always loved from SHINee’s music. Show Me is a playground of rhythm guitar and addictive bass, buoyed by a fun, shout-along chorus that feels satisfyingly retro in the best way. Key’s idiosyncratic voice is tailor-made for songs like this, brimming with personality and charisma. The track also employs one of my favorite musical touches — robust backing vocals that create a boisterous, party atmosphere. Show Me doesn’t feel like a title track. It’s not really unique enough for that. But, as an addition to the already strong Face album, I am definitely pleased. Now, get Troelsen on more SM-related work! He’s gotta have another catchy NCT Dream track up his sleeve.
