Buried Treasure: Kim Sung Kyu (Infinite) – Sometimes

Kim Sungkyu - SometimesA K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

I like Sung Kyu’s Small Talk a lot, but that’s where a bit of frustration creeps in. It’s very much the kind of song you’d “like” rather than “love.” As enjoyable as it is, there’s not a ton of ambition in its easygoing groove.

Very little about BLSSD’s productions could be described as “easygoing.” His work is often detailed within an inch of its life, as academic as it is enjoyable. I’m not a fan of everything he’s touched, but his track Sometimes is my undisputed high point on Sung Kyu’s newest album.

This would have made a great choice for title track. It’s not difficult to get into, but it has more bite and daring than we often hear from Sung Kyu’s solo material. The song waffles between upbeat — almost synthwave — production and moodier moments that showcase his always-incredible voice. I’m obsessed with the dramatic pre-chorus, which arrives with wind-tunnel backing vocals for an added spike of interest. I hope Sung Kyu keeps experimenting with his sound as he settles into this new stage of his career, because Sometimes points toward many exciting possibilities.
