Buried Treasure: Kwon Eunbi – Comet

Kwon Eunbi - CometA K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Kwon Eunbi’s new project may only consist of three songs, but all three are hits. Woollim Entertainment’s fantastic A&R team strikes again!

Comet is the work of the Newtype production team, who have become very intertwined with the agency’s artists over the past few years. I know we’re in good hands when I see their name on production credits, so it’s no surprise that Comet is a standout.

This track poses Eunbi as a dancefloor diva — even more so than title track The Flash. This is straight-ahead, pumping EDM music. It would have been very comfortable in the early-2010’s, but feels super refreshing today. I love the bigness of its instrumental, from the hearty percussion to the pulsing electronics. It reminds me of Red Velvet’s 2017 b-side You Better Know — another big EDM banger. Comet isn’t as powerful or effective as that highlight (I’m not a huge fan of its chanted post-chorus), but it sounds great with the volume turned up to eleven.

  1. Overall agree with your commentary here! This caught my ears more than The Flash. I swear, the chord progressions on this song have hints of Carly Rae Jepsen’s EMOTION projects (a holy grail for any pop listener, btw) specificially, this song’s chorus sounds like First Time. I also agree with that post-chorus being a downer, which is a bummer imo.

This comment is my semi-excuse to ask for your listening experience to Carly’s latest project, released last week. Everyone loves Psychedelic Switch, and I do too – another club banger! – but my ears loved Kollage the most.

    • I’ve only heard the Carly Rae Jepsen album once and I thought it was pleasant but nothing really caught my ear. This is similar to my experience with her last album, which is kind of frustrating. I can see why Psychedelic Switch is getting attention. Its energy definitely sticks out!

  2. Another banger.
It could use a little lean more into the vocal, a bit more charismatic oomph. It plays it safe, which since the song itself does a lot of the heavy lifting, sounds okay enough.

  3. The Flash is performed a little more dramatically, but the one-two dance punch of these songs is so nice to hear.
ig august is the month that salvages the year, once more!

  4. Eunbi’s B-sides have been really excellent- between this and “Hi” from her previous release they’re really leaning into this early 2000’s like, Hoku-esque thing and I’m obsessed. Soooooo good.

  5. I’m not really into “The Flash” but I liked this song and Beautiful Night right away, they are definitely my cup of tea.

  6. I didn’t know which track was the title when I listened to the ep but guessed it was this one? All three are great but this one blew me away – it didn’t hurt that I was listening in the car because damn right, turn this up to 11! Five stars!

Beautiful Night has a great rock vibe, the chorus is an easy five but the verses slow down a little too much – honestly the title suffers a bit in comparison to both b-sides. Not a bad problem to have! Four stars for The Flash and BN.
