Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Though I don’t think I’ll ever enjoy ONEUS’s Twilight as much as their debut single Valkyrie, the song is slowly growing on me. A strong performance and choreography definitely helps. More importantly, their second mini album is nearly as solid as their first. I can see why Twilight was chosen as the title track. It’s the most immediately catchy song on the album, after all. But, I can’t help but wish that they would have given the propulsive BingBing (개와 늑대의 시간) a chance as well.

BingBing borrows two of the three composers from Twilight, and adds Seo Youngbae for extra punch. It’s a match made in heaven, as the track harnesses a similar energy to Valkyrie and tethers it to a lighter dance pop sound. The whistling hook that opens the song is par for the course, but adds a nice bit of moodiness to the instrumental. Better yet is BingBing’s dramatic swirl of a chorus, which lends a welcome sense of immensity to the track. The production here is majestic, and perfectly compliments the airy vocal performance. Like Twilight, there are a few moments which could have used more tightening (that trap-driven bridge is a real buzzkill), but BingBing’s standout peaks are enough to compensate.
