Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of k-pop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Though rookie group ONF’s discography may be small, they’ve been on a roll since their debut last summer, steadily deepening their idiosyncratic tropical dance sound. Given their consistency, it’s no surprise to hear them elevate the quality of an OST release as well. OSTs are more often than not ballads or mid-tempos, but Your Day — taken from season three of variety show Let’s Eat — bounds out of the gate with an addictive, guitar-led dance beat.

The song’s verses have a breezy summertime appeal, with the rhythmic strum of acoustic guitar building energy before the beat drops for the euphoric EDM instrumental. I’m no fan of drops taking the place of choruses, but Your Day ensures that its central refrain feels climactic instead of neutralizing. Even so, the track really comes together when its soaring pre-chorus is laid on top of this instrumental drop during the song’s final minute. If I had my way, this is how things would have been structured from the beginning, but the wait is worth it as Your Day explodes with power.

On a side note, it’s impossible for me not to hear the pronunciation of the final lyrics “your day” as “you are gay,” which, funny enough, feels like a successful completion of the song’s underlying mission statement!
