A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
This is the first “buried treasure” I’ve featured from Purple Kiss and it’s honestly my favorite song yet from them. This probably says more about my individual taste than the group themselves, since Autopilot is not emblematic of their overall sound. It fits snugly into the ever-expanding category of synthwave-influenced K-pop tracks. Dreamcatcher have a few of these in their discography and – most recently – Key’s Killer harnessed a similar energy.
You’d think I’d be sick of this template by now, and it is beginning to feel a bit by-the-numbers. But, I’ll always be a sucker for driving energy and resonant electro sounds. Some things never go out of fashion. I also love how melodic Autopilot is. Neither verse nor chorus overshadows the other and the song’s perfunctory rap verse is well-placed so that it doesn’t derail the overall structure. The only odd choice comes at the very end, when the track transforms into a subdued acoustic outro. It’s not awful… just unexpected.
Refreshingly, Autopilot also showcases the members’ vocals. It’s not a belt-it-out kind of track and the chorus could probably go harder, but there’s a bounding, sing-along quality that’s quite nice. Like I always say with Dreamcatcher’s electro-leaning b-sides, I hope we can get a Purple Kiss title track in this vein sometime.

Also my favorite on the album followed by T4ke and Agit. You’d think I was tired of songs like this, but I have a feeling it’s going to survive the test of time like La di da and Starlight

Starlight was my most played track last year, so when people on the Dreamcatcher subreddit mentioned that this song has a similar style I instantly checked it out.
Definitely my style, I can see myself looping this a lot. The outro is the only part I don’t really appreciate, Starlight did this much better (the outro there is kinda legendary).

I like Purple Kiss a lot, and this is a great b-side.

I will say that I am very biased towards Purple Kiss and got into them pre-debut because I was excited by them being Mamamoo’s little sisters! I desperately hope we get some live stages for Autopilot because I’m already excited by imagining the choreo. I do love their quirky horror concept and sound but also looooove Autopilot’s synthpop and really hope these two can be joined in the future for a… witchy horror synthwave song? I’d be here for it. My favourite Purple Kiss song is definiely Zombie and I would love for them to explore that avenue of retro-leaning sounds more.

When I first listen to this, I think it sounds so much like cherry bullet’s love in space and love so sweet. Turns out it is produced by the same producer. Btw, a good song should have been the title track instead imo
