Most of the time, a kpop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of kpop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Seventeen’s Very Nice repackage is really a brilliant piece of pop music. Given the number of new songs and their consistent summer sound, I’m actually treating the new material as its own mini album rather than an addition to April’s Love & Letter. As such, it’s bursting with highlights. I could have easily written about Woozi’s Simple (another 9 out of 10 track), but I haven’t seen Healing (힐링) get as much press so I thought I’d touch on why this song is so fantastic.

Let’s start with its irresistibly light pop beat. Healing rides on funky, 80’s inspired production that offers the perfect blend of what makes these types of songs so fun. As usual, the melody is a grab bag of an almost limitless supply of hooks. It never stays in one place for long, jumping from one addictive segment to another with an agile mastery and constant sense of building towards something bigger. There are some familiar melodic turns here, but they’re combined in a way that makes the track feel incredibly fresh and current. It all cascades in a final anthemic refrain that sees Healing out with a hands-in-the-air party atmosphere. It’s better than most groups’ actual comebacks, and one of Seventeen’s most solid b-sides yet.
