Buried Treasure: Seventeen – Thinkin’ About You

Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-side tracks deserve recognition, too. In the singles-oriented world of k-pop, I wanted to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Seventeen’s comeback track Thanks is a complex arrangement of EDM tempo and tonal shifts, and it’s all the stronger because of this. But sometimes, I’m in the mood for a more straightforward shot of pop songcraft. The great thing about Seventeen is that they’ve proven to be masters of both styles, which has given their album material a welcome sense of diversity. At only four tracks, their newest repackage may feel all too brief. But, it’s a solid collection of wildly different sounds — held together by Seventeen’s energetic flair and sense for a killer hook.

Opening the album is Thinkin’ About You, which could have served as a summer single. Its breezy electronic pulse underlines a surging, sing-along hook that thankfully never devolves into the expected EDM or tropical house drop. Instead, we’re treated to a dynamic melody that takes advantage of the group’s colossal vocal line. Seventeen’s trademark funk is present in the persistent rhythm guitar, but rather than seek to impress with multiple breakdowns, Thinkin‘ drives forward relentlessly. This gives the song an addictive sense of momentum that feels perfectly suited to a summer drive with the breeze blowing through your hair. If only it wasn’t currently the middle of winter!
