Buried Treasure: Snuper – Girls Girls Girls

Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

I haven’t reviewed Snuper’s newest Japanese single because… well, it’s pretty average and I’ve already got enough on my plate this week. The group is slowly becoming more of a J-pop act than Korean idols, with twenty-one original Japanese songs to their name. It’s been far too long since they’ve made a comeback in Korea, and I’m honestly afraid that that ship has sailed. But, if they do ever return to their homeland, I hope it’s with a song as fun as Girls Girls Girls.

I’ve been very hard on non-Sweetune produced Snuper material (because most of it has been utter crap), but Girls offers a convincing transformation for them. It’s an easy, breezy funk pop track that shines focus on their varying vocal tones. I’m utterly obsessed with its chorus, and the contrast between the airy melody and spoken word segments. It does nothing to reinvent the wheel, but there’s just something so cool about its offhand confidence.

I’m not usually one to focus on a song’s rap segments, but they’re my favorite part of Girls. I love the structure of the pre-chorus, perched halfway between melody and hip-hop. I can’t tell if this is delivered by Taewoong or Sebin (or both), but I’m happy to hear either of them get a chance to shine. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a Snuper song this much. I just wish it was performed in Korean and promoted as a title track!

  1. Thank you so much for your interesting and deep review. I have the similar thoughts as yours. I think this song really made shine Taewoong’s rap.
