A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
Teen Top’s HWEEK is a certified summer bop, and although it only comes paired with one new b-side (the other is a re-recording) the guys don’t waste the opportunity to deliver another pop stunner. Next You is every bit as refreshing as HWEEK, recalling bright sounds of K-pop past.
I don’t have much to write about this track beyond the fact that it’s just a perfectly constructed pop song. I love the strings driving the verses, along with the unexpected splashes of percussion during the post-chorus. And speaking of choruses, Next You‘s centerpiece crests with a series of beautiful melodies — each building upon what’s come before. The track feels organic this way, with a singular vision and consistent energy. Climactic spikes of falsetto give the hook plenty of drama while keeping the tone light and airy. It’s a great match for Teen Top, and a testament to how important and appealing sturdy songwriting can be.

I love this song and even the re-recording of Missing You. 2nd gen is on another level!
