A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

On Monday, we had a triple whammy of strong title tracks. In fact, I gave all three the same “8.75” rating! I don’t think they’ll all maintain that rating as time passes, but I can confidently say Tempest’s Dangerous has become my favorite of the three. I still have some issues with the track, but its groove is completely addictive.

Thankfully, the accompanying mini album is also stronger than expected. Its highlight medley made Eye Of The Storm sound rather dull, but the full track is much more exciting than its generic opening verse suggests. It follows a similar template as Dangerous: rap verses buoyed by a big, melodic chorus. In this way, it feels like a hybrid of Tempest’s dual charms. Apart from a few unnecessary chants, the structure is taut and satisfying.

Eye Of The Storm‘s chorus aims right for my second-gen heart. It doesn’t rewrite the rules or deliver any iconic melodies, but I love the heft of this centerpiece. It feels commanding and propulsive, and acts as a natural centerpiece worth looking forward to.
